Powered By Breath: An Interview with The Healing Couple

Tell us your story! How did The Healing Couple come to be?

It all started with late night conversations about our own healing journeys, everything from our struggles with anxiety, depression and trauma to where we are now, and we realized that we needed to come together as a couple to share our work with the world. There are so many of us who are looking for inner peace, clarity, confidence and freedom, and we are so passionate about helping people discover that within themselves.

We knew that individually we were powerful healers, Cory as a Naturopathic Physician and Jessica as a yoga teacher & self-love coach, but we knew we could be even more powerful together. So we came together as The Healing Couple. We dove deeper into one of the most healing and transformational tools out there, Breathwork, and completed Breathwork Healer Training. It is now a part of everything we do, and not only has it changed our lives, but the many lives of those who experience it with us.

We launched our first workshop together on the Law of Attraction and Breathwork to help others attract what it is they truly desire and to find the power and confidence within themselves. After the workshop, our attendees shared how much this workshop changed their lives (and still do!). It was greater than we could have imagined. We looked at each other that night. In that moment, we knew our work was bigger than us, and we needed to continue to share this with as many people as possible.

Now we lead workshops and classes around the country, coach individuals through our private transformational coaching programs and we are getting ready for our first international retreat in… BALI!

Why is breathwork so important to incorporate in a health and wellness routine/ritual?

Breathwork is one of the most empowering tools out there because you are actively participating in your own healing. The 2-part breath technique that we guide facilitates an emotional release, allowing you to let go of the old emotions and thought patterns that are holding you back, and it leaves you feeling peaceful, light and grounded. You gain clarity and the energy for your day—not to just manage your day, but to THRIVE in any environment.

It also heals what may take years in other modalities. Supplements, nutrition and other wellness modalities are great, but Breathwork addresses all aspects of your well-being: mental, emotional, physical and spiritual. Breathwork is truly the biggest access to healing. Anyone anywhere can do it, and you access healing through the power of your own breath.

The more you practice Breathwork as a part of your routine, the more bliss you experience!

What is activated (physically, mentally, spiritually) when one partakes in breathwork?

Breathwork activates your parasympathetic nervous system—your ‘Rest and Digest’ system—via the vagus nerve, which determines your parasympathetic tone. By breathing in a specific pattern, you put your body in a more relaxed state. In this state, you clear your mind, let go of stress, welcome in new ideas and experiences, and many people feel light and connected.

When practicing Breathwork, you activate the centers of the brain that process and regulate emotions. This is why people feel such an emotional release. It brings up emotions you didn’t even know were there and allows you to process them rather than stuffing them down or becoming so wrapped up in them.

Also, our lungs eliminate 70% of toxins in our everyday life, so Breathwork is a very detoxifying process—physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. You are cleansing your system and creating space for what life has to give you.

Finally, we are energetic beings. Every cell in your body vibrates at a certain frequency. Think about when someone walks in room: you can feel if someone is sad or happy and they are vibrating at a certain frequency depending on those emotions. With Breathwork, you are activating your system and elevating your vibration/frequency, which is why people often feel blissed out afterwards.

What can we expect from your breathwork workshops? If someone has never done any type of meditative breathwork, how can they prepare?

Each workshop has a theme and intention, which we discuss in the beginning. Then you will learn the 2-part breath technique, and we’ll guide you to lay down on your mat. We’ll be laying down and breathing for a majority of the 1-hour workshop. We facilitate and guide you through the whole experience, and we will be there to support every student no matter what comes up.

We play music throughout Breathwork and the playlist will help you dive deeper into your experience. We will guide you to say affirmations out loud as well as other guided actions as a way to release emotions. You can experience a whole range of emotions, and it is different every single time. You will experience whatever needs to come up for you. It can release fear, pain, judgement and things that you have been holding onto for years. Some even meet loved ones who have passed. No matter what happens during Breathwork, most people leave feeling calm, clear and blissed out. People have said that they feel like the whole universe has opened up for them.

Many people who have experienced Breathwork with us have said it’s LIFE-CHANGING.

To prepare, all you need to do is dress comfortably, and we will have everything that you need (mats, blankets, etc.). Bring an open mind and an open heart and know that we are here to support and guide you through this magical journey. It’s okay if you feel like you have no idea what is going to happen or it seems a little intimidating. We have been there before. Change is scary because we are afraid of the unknown. Allow yourself to step outside of your comfort zone, and it may just be one of the most powerful experiences of your life.

Cory: Breathwork has allowed me to see both sides of myself—the darkness and the light—and to learn to accept both of them. It’s brought balance and consistent clarity into my life. It’s also brought me closer to Jessica. When we come up against struggles, sometimes there’s no logical solutions. I hop into Breathwork, and it helps me shift arguments into connection. It’s been awesome and changed our lives. And it’s been awesome to expose our families to this and see how it’s helped them too on a mental, physical and spiritual level. Out of all of the things I do as a physician, it’s the most powerful tool I’ve seen for people to transform their lives.

Jessica: Breathwork has changed my life because it got me to wake up to life. In the past, people would have described me as a happy person and “successful” on the outside, but Breathwork woke me up to what was happening on the inside. I connected to who I really am and my power—outside of society’s idea of “success” and the expectations and approval from others. This practice got me to really love myself, and everytime I do it I let go of stress, fear and the stories that my mind makes up and come back to self-love. Sharing this practice with others has changed my life, and I am so grateful for that. I get to see others transform in every one of our classes, and there is no greater gift than that.

What's next?

This year is all about connection and collaboration for us, and we are excited to co-create with amazing healers and teachers in San Diego and internationally. One of our most exciting upcoming events is our Bali Retreat August 26-September 1, which will include adventurous excursions, transformational workshops and inner healing work. This experience will connect you deeply to yourself, your vision and with other like-minded people who have big dreams. You will leave feeling rejuvenated, grounded and ready to take on the world!
